What Are Acrylic Dentures?
Acrylic dentures consist of a gum-coloured acrylic (plastic) base that supports replacement teeth made from high-quality resin or ceramic. They are one of the most widely used types of denture and can replace some or all of your teeth.
We hand-tint the acrylic gum base to match your specific gum shade, so the denture blends in as naturally as possible with your mouth.
Partial Denture
Replaces one or more missing teeth while your remaining natural teeth are still in place. Uses small clasps to grip adjacent teeth for retention.
Full Denture
Replaces all teeth in an upper or lower arch. Upper dentures rely on suction to the palate; lower dentures rest on the gum ridge.
Immediate Denture
Made in advance and fitted immediately after tooth extraction, so you are never without teeth. Will need relining as the gums heal and change shape.
Advantages
- Cost-Effective: The most affordable denture option.
- Adjustable: A new tooth can be added if you lose a natural tooth later.
- Repairable: Breaks can usually be repaired quickly.
- Quick Turnaround: Typically made within 1 to 2 weeks.
- No Surgery Required: A non-invasive, removable option.
Limitations
- Bulkier: Acrylic needs to be thicker than metal frameworks for strength, which some patients notice.
- Fragile: Can break if dropped on a hard surface.
- Lower Denture Stability: Full lower dentures can be less stable without implant support.
- Palate Coverage: Full upper dentures cover the palate, which some patients find uncomfortable initially.
The Treatment Process
Acrylic dentures are typically completed over 3 to 4 appointments.
Impressions
We take accurate moulds of your gums and any remaining teeth to create a model of your mouth.
Bite Registration
We measure how your upper and lower jaws come together to ensure the denture supports correct chewing.
Try-In
A wax version of the denture is tried in your mouth. You can check the appearance of the teeth and we can make adjustments before the final version is made.
Fitting
The finished denture is fitted and checked. We make any minor adjustments needed and provide care instructions.
Aftercare & Maintenance
Proper care will extend the life of your acrylic dentures and keep your mouth healthy.
Do
- Remove and clean your dentures after meals
- Brush dentures daily with a soft denture brush (not toothpaste)
- Soak in a denture cleaning solution overnight
- Rinse thoroughly before placing back in your mouth
- Remove dentures at night to let your gums rest
- Handle over a folded towel or basin of water to cushion any drops
- Attend regular dental check-ups to monitor fit and oral health
Avoid
- ✕ Regular toothpaste — it can be too abrasive and scratch the acrylic
- ✕ Hot or boiling water — this can warp the acrylic
- ✕ Bleach-based cleaners which can discolour the denture
- ✕ Attempting DIY repairs with superglue
- ✕ Very hard or sticky foods that could damage or dislodge the denture
- ✕ Sleeping with dentures in — this promotes bacterial growth
Risks & Considerations
Dentures are a safe and well-established treatment, but there are some considerations to be aware of.
Adjustment Period
New dentures can feel bulky and may cause mild soreness for the first 1 to 2 weeks. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to make adjustments and improve comfort.
Bone Resorption
When teeth are lost, the jawbone gradually resorbs over time. This means denture fit will change, and relines or new dentures may be needed periodically.
Lower Denture Instability
Full lower dentures have less surface area for suction and may feel less stable than upper dentures. Implant-retained options can significantly improve lower denture stability.
Oral Hygiene
Poor denture hygiene can lead to fungal infections (oral thrush) or irritation of the gums. Regular cleaning and overnight removal are important for oral health.
