Understanding Urgent Care

What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation involving significant dental pain, infection, trauma, or damage that requires prompt professional attention. This may include sudden toothache, swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, or other concerns that affect your comfort or oral health.

Pain-Related Concerns

Severe or persistent toothache, throbbing pain, or sensitivity that does not improve with over-the-counter relief may indicate an underlying issue that requires clinical assessment.

Trauma or Injury

Accidents, falls, or impacts that result in a broken, chipped, or knocked-out tooth should be assessed promptly. Quick action can sometimes make a significant difference to the outcome.

Common Concerns

Common Dental Emergencies

1

Severe Toothache

Persistent or intense tooth pain can have a number of causes, including decay, infection, or damage to the tooth. A clinical assessment helps identify the source and determine the appropriate treatment. In some cases, root canal treatment may be recommended.

2

Broken or Chipped Tooth

A tooth that has been broken or chipped through trauma or biting can often be treated to restore its shape and function. Saving any tooth fragments and contacting us promptly is advisable.

3

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown, keep it moist, and contact us as soon as possible. Prompt attention may improve the chance of saving the tooth.

4

Swelling or Infection

Facial swelling, a dental abscess, or signs of infection should be assessed promptly. Your dentist will examine the area and discuss the most appropriate course of action.

5

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown can leave the tooth exposed and sensitive. Contact us to arrange an assessment — the tooth may be protected with a temporary or permanent restoration.

Knowing When to Act

When Should You See an Emergency Dentist?

If you are unsure whether your situation requires urgent attention, the following indicators may help. A clinical assessment will determine the appropriate level of care.

Persistent or Worsening Pain

Dental pain that does not settle or continues to worsen may indicate an issue that benefits from prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Signs of Infection

Swelling, an unpleasant taste, or a raised temperature alongside dental pain may suggest an infection. Contacting us allows your dentist to assess and advise on the most suitable next steps.

Dental Trauma

If a tooth has been knocked out, loosened, or broken due to an impact or fall, seeking prompt dental attention is important. Quick assessment can sometimes improve the outcome.

Practical Guidance

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

While every situation is different, the following general guidance may help while you arrange an appointment with us.

Contact Us Promptly

Call 020 7183 2362 or book online so we can understand your concern and arrange an appropriate appointment as soon as possible.

Manage Discomfort

Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed, may help manage discomfort while you wait for your appointment. A cold compress can help with swelling.

Preserve Any Fragments

If a tooth has broken, save any pieces. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist — ideally in milk — and bring it with you to the appointment.

Avoid Self-Treatment

Avoid applying medications directly to the gums or attempting to repair dental work at home. Professional assessment ensures the most appropriate care for your situation.

Treatments Available

Emergency Dental Treatments

The treatment recommended will depend on the nature and severity of your dental concern. Your dentist will explain all options and costs before any treatment begins.

Pain Management

The initial priority is to address your discomfort. This may involve assessment, local anaesthetic, or other appropriate measures to help you feel more comfortable.

Temporary or Definitive Treatment

Depending on the issue, treatment may involve a temporary dressing, a filling, or a more definitive restoration. In some cases, tooth extraction may be discussed as part of the treatment plan.

Stabilising Dental Issues

Where immediate full treatment is not possible, your dentist may stabilise the issue and arrange follow-up care to complete the treatment at a subsequent appointment.

Availability

Same-Day Appointments

We understand that dental emergencies do not always happen at convenient times. Same-day appointments may be available depending on your circumstances and current clinic availability.

Priority for Urgent Cases

We prioritise patients with urgent dental concerns and aim to see you as quickly as possible. Contacting us early in the day can help with same-day availability.

Call to Arrange

Please call 020 7183 2362 or book online so our team can understand your concern and arrange the most appropriate appointment time for you.

Restoring a Chipped Front Tooth

A patient attended our clinic for an emergency appointment after chipping her upper left front tooth. Fortunately, the tooth was not painful or sensitive, but the chip significantly affected the appearance of her smile.

Transforming Discoloured & Chipped Teeth

The patient attended a consultation unhappy with the appearance of her upper front teeth. Her upper right central incisor (UR1) was noticeably discoloured, and both central incisors had small chips affecting the overall aesthetics of her smile. She explained that she had fallen on her teeth when she was younger, which pushed the UR1 slightly backwards. Over time, the tooth became non-vital and eventually required root canal treatment. Although the tooth was symptomless, it still appeared darker than the neighbouring teeth.
