What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth from the gum line up. It encases the weakened or damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance.
Large Filling
When a tooth has more filling than natural structure and is at risk of fracturing.
After Root Canal
Root-treated teeth become more brittle and typically need a crown for protection.
Broken Tooth
A cracked or fractured tooth may be protected with a crown to prevent further damage.
Appearance
To cover a severely discoloured or misshapen tooth where other treatments are insufficient.
Why We Use Zirconia & E-Max
Traditional crowns used a metal core with porcelain layered on top, which could develop a visible dark line at the gum margin over time. Modern zirconia and E-Max crowns are entirely metal-free.
High Strength
Zirconia is one of the strongest ceramic materials available in dentistry, highly resistant to chipping and fracture.
Biocompatible
Metal-free, which means no risk of metal allergies and generally healthier gum response.
Natural Appearance
White all the way through — no dark metal line at the gum. High-translucency versions mimic natural enamel.

The Crown Process: 2 Visits
A typical crown requires two appointments over approximately two weeks.
Preparation (Approx. 60 Minutes)
- Local anaesthetic is administered for comfort
- The tooth is shaped to accommodate the crown
- A digital scan or impression is taken
- A temporary crown is fitted to protect the tooth
Fitting (Approx. 2 Weeks Later)
- The temporary crown is removed
- The permanent crown is tried in and checked for fit, shade, and shape
- The crown is bonded permanently in place
- Your bite is checked and adjusted if needed
Aftercare & Maintenance
Proper care will help your crown last as long as possible.
Do
- Brush twice daily, paying attention to the gum line around the crown
- Floss daily — bacteria can still affect the tooth beneath the crown
- Attend regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments
- Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth
- Contact us promptly if the crown feels loose or you notice sensitivity
Avoid
- ✕ Chewing ice, hard sweets, or very hard foods on the crown
- ✕ Using teeth to open packages or bite nails
- ✕ Very sticky foods that could pull on the crown
- ✕ Attempting to re-cement a loose crown with superglue
- ✕ Skipping dental check-ups (decay can develop beneath a crown)
Risks & Considerations
As with any dental treatment, there are considerations to be aware of.
Tooth Preparation
Some natural tooth structure must be removed to fit the crown. This is irreversible. Your dentist removes only as much as necessary.
Sensitivity
Some patients experience temporary sensitivity to hot and cold after crown preparation. This usually settles within a few weeks.
Nerve Damage
In rare cases, preparing a tooth for a crown can irritate the nerve, which may require root canal treatment. Your dentist will discuss this risk.
Crown Failure
Crowns can chip, crack, or come loose over time, particularly with heavy grinding or trauma. Regular check-ups help identify issues early.

Patient Experiences
Replacing Old Metal Crowns
Concern: Patient had several old metal-based crowns with visible dark margins at the gum line that were affecting the appearance of their smile.
Treatment: The old crowns were replaced with all-ceramic zirconia crowns, eliminating the dark margins.
Outcome: The patient was pleased with the improved appearance and reported the new crowns felt comfortable and natural.
Individual results may vary. A clinical assessment is required to determine suitability.
Protecting a Cracked Molar
Concern: Patient had cracked a large filling in a molar. The tooth was at risk of splitting and potentially needing extraction.
Treatment: A zirconia crown was placed over the weakened tooth to hold the structure together and prevent further fracture.
Outcome: The crown protected the tooth from further damage, preserving it and restoring normal chewing function.
Individual results may vary. A clinical assessment is required to determine suitability.
