What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made ceramic shells that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. They can address a range of cosmetic concerns including discolouration, chips, gaps, and minor misalignment.

Unlike composite bonding, which is sculpted directly onto the tooth, porcelain veneers are crafted in a dental laboratory for enhanced durability and stain resistance.

Longevity

Typically 15–20 years with proper care and regular hygiene appointments.

Stain Resistant

Non-porous porcelain resists staining from coffee, tea, and red wine.

Strength

Strong once bonded to the underlying tooth structure.

Natural Appearance

Custom-made to match natural tooth colour, shape, and translucency.

Veneers Can Address

1

Discolouration

Deep internal staining that teeth whitening alone cannot improve.

2

Worn or Aged Teeth

Restoring the shape and length of teeth worn down over time.

3

Chips or Cracks

Covering damaged front teeth for an improved appearance.

4

Minor Misalignment

Improving the appearance of slightly crooked or uneven teeth.

The Treatment Process

Porcelain veneers typically require 2–3 visits over a few weeks.

1

Consultation & Planning

We discuss your goals, examine your teeth, and plan the treatment. This includes shade selection and discussion of the expected outcome.

2

Tooth Preparation

A thin layer of enamel (0.3–0.5mm) is carefully removed under local anaesthetic. Impressions are taken for the ceramist.

3

Temporary Veneers

While your porcelain veneers are being crafted in the laboratory, temporary restorations protect your prepared teeth.

4

Fitting & Bonding

Your custom veneers are checked for fit, colour, and shape, then permanently bonded to your teeth.

Aftercare & Maintenance

How to look after your porcelain veneers.

Do

  • Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily and use interdental brushes
  • Attend regular hygiene appointments (every 6 months)
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth (bruxism)
  • Contact us promptly if a veneer feels loose or chips

Avoid

  • Biting hard objects (ice, pen caps, fingernails)
  • Using teeth as tools (opening packets)
  • Abrasive toothpaste (can scratch the porcelain surface)
  • Excessive alcohol-based mouthwash (can weaken bonding cement over time)
  • Contact sports without a mouthguard

Risks & Considerations

Important information to consider before treatment.

Irreversible

Enamel removal is permanent. Once prepared, teeth will always require veneers or similar restorations.

Sensitivity

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity to hot and cold following preparation. This usually resolves within a few weeks.

Chipping

While durable, porcelain can chip if subjected to excessive force. Night guards are recommended for patients who grind their teeth.

Replacement

Veneers are long-lasting but not permanent. They will need replacing eventually, typically after 15–20 years.

Patient Experiences

Long-Term Stability

A patient who was unhappy with previous composite bonding opted for porcelain veneers. At their 11-year review, the veneers remained stable and aesthetically pleasing with no chips or staining.

Individual results may vary. Longevity depends on oral hygiene, diet, and individual habits.

Addressing Discolouration

A patient with deep internal staining that could not be improved with whitening chose porcelain veneers. The custom shade matching produced a natural-looking result they were pleased with.
