Periodontal Treatment South Kensington
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. If you have bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or loose teeth, periodontal treatment can help stabilise the condition.

Gingivitis vs. Periodontitis
Gum disease exists on a spectrum. Gingivitis is the early, reversible stage involving gum inflammation. If left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis — a more serious condition where infection spreads below the gum line and damages the bone supporting the teeth.
Warning Signs
Contact us if you notice any of the following:
- Bleeding Gums: Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing.
- Receding Gums: Teeth appearing longer as the gum tissue pulls back.
- Persistent Bad Breath: Halitosis that does not improve with brushing.
- Loose or Shifting Teeth: Teeth that feel mobile or have changed position.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Gum disease often develops without pain, which means it can progress significantly before symptoms become noticeable. Bleeding gums are not normal — they indicate inflammation that warrants assessment.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we recommend booking a periodontal assessment so we can evaluate the situation and discuss treatment options.
Root Surface Debridement
The clinical process for treating periodontal disease.
Assessment & Mapping
We measure pocket depths around every tooth using a periodontal probe. This creates a detailed map of the extent of disease.
Local Anaesthesia
The treatment area is numbed with local anaesthetic so you are comfortable throughout the procedure.
Debridement
Using ultrasonic and hand instruments, we carefully remove bacteria and calculus deposits from the root surfaces below the gum line.
Healing & Review
The gums are given time to heal and reattach to the cleaned root surfaces. We reassess pocket depths at your review appointment.
After Periodontal Treatment
What to expect and how to support healing.
Do
- Brush gently twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Use interdental brushes daily (your hygienist will recommend the correct sizes)
- Take any prescribed antibiotics as directed
- Attend all maintenance appointments (typically every 3 months)
- Use a chlorhexidine mouthwash if recommended by your clinician
Avoid
- ✕ Smoking — the single greatest risk factor for gum disease progression
- ✕ Skipping maintenance appointments (bacteria can re-colonise within weeks)
- ✕ Hard or crunchy foods for the first 48 hours after treatment
- ✕ Vigorous brushing near treatment areas while gums are healing
- ✕ Ignoring increased tooth sensitivity — contact us if it persists beyond 2 weeks
Risks & Considerations
As with all dental treatment, there are some considerations to be aware of.
Tooth Sensitivity
Teeth may feel more sensitive to hot and cold after treatment as gums recede slightly during healing. This is usually temporary.
Gum Recession
As inflammation resolves, gums may recede, making teeth appear slightly longer. This is a sign of healing.
Gaps Between Teeth
As swollen gums shrink back to a healthier state, small gaps may become visible between teeth.
Ongoing Management
Periodontitis is a chronic condition. Treatment aims to control the disease, but lifelong maintenance is required to prevent relapse.
Gum Disease & General Health
Research has identified associations between periodontal disease and a number of systemic health conditions. While the exact nature of these links is still being studied, treating gum disease may contribute to better overall health.
Sources: British Society of Periodontology, NHS. These are associations; causal links are still under investigation.

Patient Experiences
Stabilising Loose Teeth
A patient presented with mobility in several lower front teeth and was concerned about losing them. Following a course of root surface debridement, the inflammation resolved and the teeth became noticeably firmer at the review appointment.
Individual results may vary. Outcomes depend on the severity of disease, patient compliance, and other health factors.
Early Intervention
A patient was referred by their hygienist after pocket depths of 5–6mm were recorded. Early periodontal treatment and improved home care brought pocket depths within a healthier range at the 3-month review.
Individual results may vary. Treatment success depends on early diagnosis and ongoing maintenance.
