Do Home Remedies for Teeth Whitening Always Work?

Discoloration of teeth can lead to embarrassment in public and make us miss out on social events and get together. To save from this social ridicule and humiliation most of the people in London and elsewhere go for expensive teeth whitening treatments. However, some of us who are unable to afford these procedures go for home remedies to brighten teeth, as they are cheap and affordable.

Does strawberry actually whiten teeth?

Many people consider strawberries to do the same trick as any another teeth whitening treatment in London or elsewhere. Due to the high acid content in it, many use it as a way to lighten the colour of their teeth. The method involves mashing up one or two ripe strawberries and dipping the toothbrush in them before brushing. It can provide a whiter appearance to yellowed and discoloured teeth but has no effects on stains and spots. However, the effectiveness of this treatment is questioned by many dental experts.

Home remedies that are not good for your teeth

  • Eating apples: It is supposed to have the same effect on teeth as that of strawberries. However, it can be disastrous for your enamel if you don’t brush your teeth after consuming apples.
  • Drinking water and milk: These items are good for the development and health of your teeth but hardly contribute to lightening the colour of teeth.
  • Coconut oil: There is no medical evidence of this home remedy to be effective.
  • Charcoal: You can use charcoal for teeth whitening purpose but it does not strengthen your gums.

A home remedy that actually works:

Bicarbonate Soda:

Rinsing mouth with lukewarm water mixed with a pinch of bicarbonate soda can help in reducing the acidity in the mouth. It not only makes the teeth white but also removes stains caused due to the consumption of red wine, coffee, black tea and others. Apart from this, it helps in removing plaque from the surface of the teeth and neutralizes the bacteria and acidic content in your mouth. However, too much usage of this compound can harm your gums. Limit the usage of bicarbonate soda 2 to 3 times in a year.

Many people go for home remedies to avoid the excessive cost but following this procedure might induce more harm to their teeth and gums. However, not all home remedies for teeth whitening are effective. You need to choose wisely when it comes to teeth whitening and other oral issues. Even though it might cost a little extra, visiting a dentist for oral exam is the best way to ensure the good health of your teeth.
